Small-Sided Two-Directional Attacking Game

two-directional attacking game.png

Procedure: The two teams play 4 v 4 inside of the red zone, attacking the two small goals. At any time, the attackers can pass or dribble out of the red zone to attack the large goal as well. Each team has a player stationed outside of the red zone to defend any attacks on the large goals. After saves or goals, the goalkeeper re-starts the game by playing the ball to a teammate in the 4 v 4. The players outside of the red zone cannot join in on any of the attacks.

Coaching Points:

  1. Decision Making – Maintain possession until an excellent opportunity to go to goal arises.
  2. Speed of Play – Play one and two touch soccer and force the defenders to chase.
  3. Decision Making – When defenders close down areas of the field, switch the play to a different small goal or look to get an attacker free for an attack on the large goal.

Progression: Use the player outside of the red zone to join in on the attack.
