Full Triangle Training Method Session #1

The following soccer training session comes from The Triangle Training Method.

Diamond Passing Warm Up (8-10 minutes)

Start practice getting your players feet moving and touches left foot and right foot with the Diamond Passing Warm up.  It's a great way to get everyone working on their game right away...(It's also a great self improvement exercise for your players to perform at home)

ote: Whatever passing exercise you choose next... already have your triangles or mannequins set up in that configuration for the players to perform the warm up in.  It will keep your practice moving quickly from one phase to the next and keep the team organized in a space where you can observe every player to offer coaching points and encouragement! (catch them doing something good coach!)


Rotation Right and Rotation Left (7-9 minutes total)

Once they get the technique of popping their hips open to expand the game, make it fun by turning it into a quick passing and receiving competition.

Whoever can pass the ball around the triangle 4 times the quickest wins!  Compete left and right.



Touch Backpedal Right and Touch Backpedal Left (7-9 minutes total)

Remind players that when the spacing becomes too tight, a quick back pedal movement can open up options.  This exercise is a terrific one for getting players checking to the ball, looking before and opening up to the options.  A fun one to coach and watch players improve.

For sure... Turn it into a competition



3v3+3 Game (15-20 minutes total)

Such a great game for getting your team to play in triangles between the lines of your opponents.  The end line neutral targets simulate playing with a target forward.  One of our teams favorite exercises for sure...

Note:  If you are training 12 players or 15... Rotate the teams every 1.5 to 2 minutes to keep the level high...winner stays on!

Ok... so that is your first 40 to 55 minutes of training, with water breaks, your players will have performed hundreds of passes with their left and right foot, competed, and played a great small sided game.  The last half of your practice is up to you.  Play, finishing, defending... whatever you want to emphasize that day.

As a final suggestion... perhaps consider sending your players this article so that they can see the exercises in advance. That way they will have done their "homework" and come prepared to learn.
