CONCACAF Champions League Final (2nd Leg)
Montreal Impact vs Club America
Stade Olympique, Montreal
April 29, 8:00pm ET
US TV:Fox Sports 2, UniMas
Canadian TV: Sportsnet One, TVA Sports 2
The CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) winner will be crowned tonight as the Montreal Impact host Club America at 8:00pm ET. History may be in the making as an MLS team has never won the regional competition in its current format. Mexican teams have dominated the tournament with only one other non-Mexican team even making it to the final, Real Salt Lake. RSL fell 3-2 to Monterrey in 2011. MLS has rallied around the Canadian Club by rescheduling several of the Impact's games so they could focus on the CCL. Whether or not the Impact can capitalize on this support is up to them tonight at the sold out Stade Olympique in Montreal.
In the first leg of the two-legged final Montreal stunned Club America at the always daunting Estadio Azteca by securing a 1-1 draw. A 16th minute counter-attack strike from Montreal's Ignacio Piatti gave the away side an unexpected lead until the 89th minute when the CCL's leading scorer(6 goals), Oribe Peralta, headed home from close range to secure the draw.
Montreal's plucky run in the CCL comes as a huge surprise as they have been one of the worst teams in MLS during the last two years. However, they did manage to qualify through the Amway Canadian Championship by defeating Toronto FC in the final and have made a storied run through to the CCL final. Club America is a different story, they are a perennial power in Mexico and won the title in the Fall Liga MX Apertura season and sit in seventh place, but only three points from the top, in the spring Clausura season. They also lead this edition of the CCL with a whopping 31 goals scored. Montreal has scored 14.
The winner will receive a cash prize and advance to the FIFA Club World Cup to compete against the other continental Champions. A CONCACAF team has never made it to the final of the Club World Cup.
